TINTILIA grape from MOLISE...
Note: Stocks of the wines below are very limited
The Tintilia red grape variety is grown in relatively small quantities in one of Italy’s smallest wine regions, namely Molise in the south of the country and is a grape variety that deserves some limelight. Tintilia is being regarded as the regions best chance of gaining international success but that was not always the case, in the 1970’s and 80’s it nearly became extinct as many farmers uprooted the vines. The reason lies in the fact that Tintilia is notoriously low yielding and with so many producers getting paid on volume, the use of the grape became scarce. It was only in the very late 1990’s that the governing body took the decision to reignite the grapes position by giving “Tintilia de Molise” DOC status and this got a few quality-conscious producers working hard to produce something truly unique and special. The results since then have been remarkable and more wine producers are turning to this indigenous gem as the regions real red wine identity.
